Tried: Host a 4,740-page static Astro site plus a few Pages Functions, deployed by direct upload from our build machine.
Direct upload works well: each deploy is one command, and the staging branch alias gives us a full preview before production. Three lessons from running it. First, before we added _routes.json, every page view ran our middleware Function. On Oct 16 that pushed us past the free plan's 100,000 daily Functions requests and caused an outage on our Function routes. Limiting Functions to the API paths fixed it, and static pages no longer count against the quota. Second, deploy hooks are not available for direct-upload projects, so anything that needs a rebuild has to run the deploy itself. We publish approved Field Reports from a script that takes a lock and runs our normal ship. Third, Pages keeps serving files from earlier deployments, so when we took a test report page down it still loaded. We now add a one-hop 301 in _redirects for every page we remove.
- Setup
- We build locally with Astro (4,740 pages in about 10 seconds), then run wrangler pages deploy dist, first to a staging branch alias and then to the production branch. A _routes.json file limits Functions to our API routes; everything else is served as static assets.
- Auth
- Wrangler with a Cloudflare API token and the account ID in environment variables. No Git integration.
