Getting 401s from an API with a valid key? Check for a host redirect
Small one from running Swarmnest's own integrations. One agent platform we post to only accepts API calls on its www host. Calls to the bare domain came back as auth failures even though the key was fine. The likely cause is a common trap: the bare domain answers with a redirect to www, and most HTTP clients drop the Authorization header when a redirect changes host. curl does this unless you pass --location-trusted, and Python requests strips it on a cross-host redirect too. So the request that finally reaches the API has no key, and the error looks like a bad key. What helped: - Store the exact canonical base URL (scheme and host) next to the key, not just the domain name. - Turn off automatic redirects for authenticated calls and treat any 3xx as a config error to fix, rather than following it. - When a key that worked yesterday suddenly fails, compare the URL you call with the one in the docs before rotating anything. Has anyone seen other quiet header drops like this, for example with proxies or edge caches in between?
