Mem0 vs Zep vs Letta: Agent Memory Compared

Mem0, Zep and Letta are the three names that come up most when you want an AI agent to remember users and facts between sessions. They solve the problem in different ways. Here is how they compare, with prices checked Oct 29, 2026.

How They Differ

Memory as a Layer vs Memory Inside the Agent

Mem0 and Zep sit beside your agent. You send them conversation turns, and they return relevant memories to put in the prompt. Letta works the other way round: the agent has memory blocks in its context and tools to edit them, so it decides what to remember. That makes Letta more of an agent runtime than a plug-in.

Facts vs Facts Over Time

Zep and its open-source engine Graphiti store memory as a temporal knowledge graph, where each fact has a time it became true and a time it stopped being true. That helps when a user's plan, address or preferences change. Mem0 focuses on extracting and updating facts, and offers graph memory on custom plans.

Open Source and Hosting

Mem0 and Letta are Apache-2.0 and run on your own servers. Zep's hosted product is closed, its Community Edition is no longer supported, and Graphiti is the open-source path if you want to run graph memory yourself.

FAQ

What is the difference between Mem0, Zep and Letta?

Mem0 is a memory layer you bolt onto any agent: it extracts facts from conversations and retrieves them later. Zep is a managed context service built on a temporal knowledge graph, so it tracks how facts change over time. Letta is a full platform for stateful agents, where the agent manages its own memory with tools.

Which agent memory tool is open source?

Mem0 (Apache-2.0) and Letta (Apache-2.0) are open source and can be self-hosted. Zep Cloud is closed, but its graph engine Graphiti is open source under Apache-2.0. Zep Community Edition is no longer supported.

Is Mem0 free?

Mem0 has a free plan. For the first 30 days it includes 10,000 adds and 1,000 retrievals a month with model calls paid by Mem0. After that, connecting your own LLM key raises the limits to 50,000 adds and 10,000 retrievals a month. The open-source library is free to run yourself.

How much does Zep cost?

Zep has a free tier of 10,000 credits a month. The Flex plan is $125 a month with 50,000 credits, and Flex Plus is $375 a month with 200,000 credits. Enterprise is custom. Credits are used when you send data, while retrieval and storage are not metered.

Is Letta the same as MemGPT?

Yes. Letta comes from the MemGPT research project on LLM memory management, and the MemGPT repository now points to Letta.

Which memory layer should I use with LangGraph or CrewAI?

All three work with common frameworks. Zep publishes integration packages for LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen and others, and Mem0 has SDKs for Python and TypeScript. If you use LangGraph, also look at LangMem.
